Underground Tunnel Found In Cole County

A piece of history at the Cole County Courthouse was discovered yesterday by a group of construction workers.

According to Cole County Presiding Commissioner Sam Bushman the workers found the tunnel while digging.

It is thought the six foot tall tunnel was likely built in the late 1800’s.

It was made out of red bricks, a signature part of early German architecture.

The commissioner is currently working with the Historical City of Jefferson and other local historians to figure out what it is and where it may lead.
