Man Accused Of Killing Columbia Sports Editor Wants Freedom

A man currently in prison for the 2001 killing of a Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor is asking for his freedom.

Charles Erickson pleaded guilty in 2004 in the death of Kent Heitholt.

He told police he had memories that were dream like of helping Ryan Ferguson rob Heitholt just before he was killed.

Ferguson had his conviction and life sentence vacated in 2013.

According to court records Erickson’s attorneys filed a petition this month in Pike County seeking his freedom.

It is unknown when the judge will issue a ruling.
