Jefferson City Council Votes to Remove Confederate Monument

Jefferson City will soon remove a monument to Confederate General Sterling Price on Moreau Drive.

The Jefferson City Council voted last night (Monday) 8-2 in favor of a resolution to remove the monument donated by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The monument was placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1933 to commemorate the battle that never happened after General Sterling Price decided not to attack Jefferson City out of his love for the town.

The United Daughters of Confederacy was supportive of the Ku Klux Klan and openly espoused its views, even though the Klan terrorized many residents of Jefferson City, including African-Americans and Catholics.

It’s unclear when the city will remove the monument.
