Macon Takes Down Bulldog Varsity Squads

The Mexico junior varsity boys and girls swept Macon Tuesday night in basketball action. That was the highlight of a quad-header as the Tigers and Tigerettes swept varsity action.

The MHS varsity girls fell behind 8-0 before Claire Hudson hit a deep three, and it looked like Mexico might creep back into the game, but Macon had other ideas. The Tigerettes used a Teagen Engle layup to lead 15-5 after one.

Karlee Sefrit hit a trey to open the second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs, but another Engle lay-up and a Payton Weimer three opened the lead to 10 midway through the frame. Mexico closed to 20-14 at the half as Capri’ona Fountain got a lay-up and Kylie Burnett hit a shot from just off the free throw line.

Macon opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and the game was all but over as MHS won 47-30.

Sefrit led Mexico (7-12) with a team high 11 points. Jordan Thurman had 5 while four players added 4 points apiece for Mexico.

Macon, improving to 6-12, got 11 points apiece from Brooke Weimer and Reece Barnett along with 10 from Payton Weimer.

In boys action, it was much the same story: Too much Macon at the start.

The Tigers opened by trading baskets with Mexico before going on a 14-0 run. An Anthony Shivers shot from inside the arc temporarily stopped the run, before Macon answered with a couple of baskets from Brandon Douglas and Caleb Reger. They led 25-8 after one.

A Shivers trey DJ Long free throw started a Mexico run going into the second as Mexico closed to within 10 at 29-19, but the Dawgs were unable to hold on as Macon extended to a 42-23 halftime lead.

Jordan Shelton got a steal and lay-in to start the third and after a Reger bucket Long hit a trey and Shelton got another lay-up to cut into the Tiger lead. Shivers got two layups while Shelton got one in between Macon buckets and Jaydon Eldridge knocked down a 12-footer before PJ Perkins got a lay-in to wrap up the third and Mexico found itself down 10 once again, 50-40.

Mexico closed to within eight early in the final frame on lay-ups from Long and Perkins but the teams basically traded buckets down the stretch as Mexico fell, 69-58.

Macon improved to 16-3 and was led by Douglas (who was honored with a game ball for scoring his 1,000th point prior to the game) with a game-high 18, Mykel Linear chipped in 15, while Reger had 14 and Hayden Lovingier added 10.

Mexico fell to 12-7 with the loss. Shivers had a team high 15, while Shelton added 14, Long had 12 and Perkins 11.
