Mexico Varsity Squads Split With Moberly

The Mexico High School boys basketball team improved to 13-7 overall, and 5-1 in the North Central Missouri Conference, Friday night, with an 83-53 win over Moberly High School. The Bulldogs got off to a 7-0 run as senior guard Anthony Shivers hit a two from just inside the arc on the right wing and junior guard DJ Long hit a three from just behind the arc as they led comfortably after the first quarter, 20-8. Moberly actually outscored Mexico in the 2nd quarter, albeit just 20-19, but MHS still led at the half, 39-28.

Mexico then broke it open in the third. It was Shivers again getting them started on a 10-0 run with a three from the right wing. Shivers hit another three later in the quarter as the Dawgs went on a 23-11 binge. MHS hit for 9 trey’s on the game, led by Long’s three and his game high 19 points.

The Bulldogs end with five players in double digits. Along with Long, Jordan Shelton had 13, Jaydon Eldridge had 12, and Shivers and PJ Perkins both notched 10 apiece.

For Moberly, sophomore guard Mason Bivins came off the bench to lead them with 15. The Spartans fell to 3-16 overall.

The Mexico boys JV team also won, 42-26.

In girls action, Moberly and Mexico battled for the first half of the first quarter to a 7-all tie in an up-and-down game. From there, it was all uphill for the Lady Dawgs as Moberly cruised to a 61-29 win. The Lady Spartans went on a 29-8 run to end the half in total control, 36-15.

Messiah Simpson led MHS (7-13) in scoring with 9 points.

Moberly was led by Asa Fanning with 17, Grace Billington with 15 and Kennedy Messer with 12.

The Mexico JV girls also lost. The final was 35-15.

Ty Sims was named King at Winter Warming. The son of Cody and Katie Sims. He was escorted by Aleigha Jackson. She is the daughter of Byron Jackson and Jessica Winterbower. Other candidates, and their escorts were Morgan Grubb (Estrella Lopez), Elias Owens (Sidney Turlington), Anthony Shivers (Messiah Simpson), and Mekhi Owens (Lexie Willer).
