Mexico Boys Win, Girls Lose
The Mexico varsity boys basketball team ran their record to 16-9 Friday night with a 85-48 road win over Moberly. The JV boys also had success on the night with a 47-22 victory to raise their record to 15-1.
The night started however on a much different note, as the Moberly JV girls beat Mexico 42-15, and the varsity Lady Spartans won 60-19 to run their record to 17-7.
In the varsity matchup, Moberly ran to a 19-0 lead before a Karlee Sefrit bucket got MHS on the scoreboard. They trailed 24-2 after one quarter. Messiah Simpson hit a bucket and Claire Hudson hit a trey, but it didn’t match up to the 15-point Spartan second quarter as Moberly led 39-7 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs mustered six points in both the third and fourth quarter, which included a 5-of-6 performance at the free throw line. Hudson led Mexico in scoring with 7, while Sefrit added 6.
Moberly was led by Kennedy Messer with 16 points, Asa Fanning added 11 and Haley Baker 10.
In boys action, PJ Perkins got the start for the injured forward and the sophomore forward shined. He was all over the place early on, both offensively and defensively. He scored 9 of his game high 22 in the first to pace the Dogs to a 23-9 lead.
The Dogs scored 23 more in the second behind 6-point quarters from DJ Long and Jordan Shelton. They led 46-21 at the half.
For the third straight quarter Mexico scored 23 points as Perkins again spearheaded the scoring.
The Dogs ended up with four players in double digits. Alongside Perkins were Long with 17, Shelton with 13 and Jaydon Eldridge with 10 points, all in the first half.
Mexico wraps up the regular season Tuesday night at home for senior night against Hannibal.
