Mexico City Council Meets In Regular Session
Mexico voters will decide on April 4th whether an additional three percent sales tax will be charged on marijuana sales in Mexico following tonight’s (Monday’s) city council meeting.
The council unanimously approved putting the proposal on the municipal ballot, joining a number of other municipalities in the state doing the same thing.
Voters in Missouri approved Amendment 3 in November legalizing adult use marijuana sales and allowing political subdivisions to impose a tax of up to three percent on those sales.
Estimates from the Missouri Municipal League estimates revenue of $150,000 from each dispensary at a three percent tax.
Given the extra burden imposed on Mexico Public Safety, including the possibility of adding additional Drug Recognition Experts to supplement the one DRE on staff now, the income from the proposed tax would be used to fund general public safety purposes.
Voters in Mexico will also have council and school board election on the April ballot.
