KWWR Sports Report 3/13/23
In Class 1 boys basketball from the weekend, South Iron beat St. Elizabeth 56 – 47 for the championship while Glasgow took fourth place.
In Class 2 boys, the Salisbury Panthers took home the championship trophy, beating Principia 55 – 46.
On the girls side, the Tipton Lady Cardinals beat Bishop LeBlond 55 – 36 to claim the title while New Haven edged out Norwood 44 – 43 for third place.
In Class 4, on the boys side Father Tolton beat Logan-Rogersville to advance to the Final Four, taking on Vashon Thursday afternoon at 2:00.
On the girls side, Vashon beat Moberly 60 – 34 and Southern Boone beat Ava 36 – 27, setting up a Final Four matchup between Vashon and Southern Boone Friday evening at 6:00.
In Class 5, Jefferson City boys knocked off Hillcrest 60 – 56 to advance to the Final Four Saturday afternoon at 4:00, taking on Ladue Horton Watkins.
On the girls side, the Lady Jays of Jefferson City bowed out after a loss to West Plains, 59 – 38.
In Class 6 boys, Battle lost to Staley 81 – 37 while Troy Buchanan advances to the Final Four with a win over Chaminade College Prep 74 – 62.
It’s Troy and Kickapoo Saturday at Noon.
For the girls of Class 6, Troy Buchanan lost to Incarnate Word Academy, ending their season.
Rock Bridge narrowly beat Park Hills South 58 – 57 to move on to the Final Four taking on Eureka Saturday evening at 6:00.

Mizzou entered the SEC Tournament Friday after a double bye as the number 4 seed, facing #17 Tennessee and won 79 – 71 to advance to the semifinal round for the first time in school history.
D’Moi Hodge scored a game-high 26 points with Kobe Brown close behind with 24.
In the semifinals on Saturday, fourth-ranked Alabama used a late push to earn a 72 – 61 win over the Tigers.
The Tigers were led once again by D’Moi Hodge with 21 points.
Alabama went on to win the SEC Tournament, beating Texas A&M 82 – 63.
Now, it’s on to the NCAA Tournament and the Tigers enter as the #7 seed in the South Regional and face #10 Utah State Thursday afternoon at 12:40 in Sacramento.
In other Mizzou news, the Board of Curators voted unanimously to extend Dennis Gates’ contract through the 2028-29 season.
The one-year extension will see Gates’ annual salary increase to $4 million starting with the 2023-24 season with $100,000 increases each season through the life of the contract.
For the third straight year, the Mizzou women’s basketball team will be in postseason play in the WNIT.
They finished the regular season 17 -13 and 6 – 10 in SEC play.
The Tigers are hoping the third time is the charm after losing in the first round in 2021 to Fresno State and in 2022 to Drake.
Mizzou will find out their opponent today with round 1 beginning Wednesday.
Missouri Valley contender Missouri State also brings their 20 – 11 season record to the WNIT.

In spring training over the weekend, the Cards picked up wins in 2 of 3 games, winning Friday over the Mets 7 – 5 and Sunday over Washington 6 – 1.
They dropped Saturday’s game to Houston 3 – 2.
The Royals were 3 for 3, getting wins over San Diego 1 – 0, Milwaukee 12 – 2 and Cleveland 7 – 6.
Both teams are off today.

On the ice, the Blues split a pair of games over the weekend.
Saturday, they won over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5 – 2 on the road before hosting the Vegas Golden Knights last night at Enterprise Center.
Vegas came away with a 5 – 3 victory.

The St. Louis Battlehawks made their home debut in the XFL yesterday in front of a record crowd of 38,310 at The Dome at America’s Center.
They improve to 3 – 1 nearly halfway through the season with the 24 – 11 win over the Arlington Renegades.
St. Louis stays home this week, taking on the undefeated D. C. Defenders at 6:00 Saturday night.
