NO CHARGES FILED IN COLUMBIA OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING LAST YEAR

No charges will be filed in a Columbia officer involved shooting that resulted in the death of Clarence Coats Jr. in May last year.

In a statement by the Callaway County Prosecuters Office it says in receipt of all the reports and investigative material from various law enforcement agencies it was concluded that prior to the incident Coates had recently used methamphetamine, and was upset about the end of a relationship.

According to the report Coates engaged in a verbal dispute with a number of family members when he armed himself with a shotgun and ammunition and began shooting indiscriminately from behind a residence at 107 Oak Street.

The report says the officer who killed Coats did not shoot him until a gun was pointed at an uninvolved civilian.
