A man running for a seat in the United States Senate tweeted for the legalization of machine guns.

Austin Petersen said in a tweet that it is “Time to stop playing defense on the #2ndAmendment and start going on the offense. It’s time we start talking about legalizing machine guns and repealing the National Firearms Act entirely.”

In a second tweet,he defended his tweet saying “Repealing the National Firearms Act is a good first step, but also we should repeal the Hughes Amendment, so citizens can purchase more modern machine guns manufactured after 1986.”

Petersen ran for president in 2016, but lost the Libertarian nomination to Gary Johnson.

Petersen is seeking the seat currently held by Clare McCaskill.
