Winter Safety For Pets

The Humane Society of Missouri is offering tips on how to keep pets safe in cold weather.

The Humane Society recommends bringing pets inside as they are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite.

If dogs are going to be left outdoors, owners should provide a well insulated, draft free dog house with a sturdy, flexible covering on the door to prevent icy winds from entering.

They also recommend checking pets paws frequently for signs of cold weather damage, such as a cracked paw pad or bleeding, and be sure to rinse and dry their paw after being outside as de-icing products can irritate their feet.

A sweater for a dog can help them keep warm.

Pet owners should make sure to clean up any antifreeze spills quickly, as the taste and smell can be attractive.
