Abortion Rights Advocates Bring Lawsuit Against Secretary of State Ashcroft

A law suit is being brought by abortions rights advocates against Missouri Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft.

No Bans on Choice Committee and the American Civil Liberties Union announced the lawsuit yesterday (Thursday) after they tried to put Missouri’s new abortion law on the 2020 ballot in hopes voters would overturn it.

The group ran out of time to gather enough signatures to put the law on holding a public vote.

Attorneys for those who are suing put the blame on Ashcroft, claming he dragged his feet in processing the referendum, leaving them with only 2 weeks to gather one hundred thousand signatures.

A spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office said state attorneys are currently reviewing the lawsuit.

The new abortion law is set to take effect on August 28th.
