Jefferson City Confederate Monument Removed

Less than 24 hours following a Jefferson City Council vote to remove it, a Confederate monument to Sterling Price has been removed.

City crews removed the monument this morning (Tuesday).

The Jefferson City Council voted last night (Monday) night 8-2 in favor of a resolution to remove the monument donated by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The monument was placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 193 to commemorate the battle that never happened after General Sterling Price decided no to attack Jefferson City out of his love for the town.

The United Daughters of Confederacy was supportive of the Ki Klux Klan and openly espoused its views, even though the Klan terrorized many residents of Jefferson City, including African-Americans and Catholics.

The monument will be stored until the City of Jefferson decides what to do with it.
