Champ Clark Bust Among Artwork Damaged During Capitol Riot Last Week

The statue of a Northeast Missouri man who almost became president was among artwork damaged during a protest at the Capitol last week.

Representatives of the group that oversees Champ Clark’s historic home in Bowling Green were notified on Friday, two days after the violence.

The extent of harm done to the Champ Clark bust is not clear.

The likeness of Clark was unveiled in 1925 in the main corridor between the House chambers and Statutory Hall.

Clark came very close to winning the 1912 Democrat presidential nomination that went to Woodrow Wilson.

A damage assessment of Capitol artwork is still being done.
