Mexico Schools Providing Extra Counseling to Students After Tragic Loss of Freshman Emma Azdell

Students and staff at the Mexico High School and the Mexico community continue to grieve and are trying to process the loss of 15 year old freshman Emma Azdell who was killed on Saturday due to an ATV accident.

Mexico High School Principal Brad Ellebracht has communicated with parents and staff members that additional counselors will be at the school, and they will be available to meet with students win groups or individually as needed and local pastors in town have been contacted to be on standby.

Mr. Ellebracht says it is important to remember that death can impact students in many different ways.

Being available to listen to your child’s feelings and concerns will help them work through what can be a confusing and emotional experience.

Some common reactions to grief include:

• Feeling sad or crying
• Feeling worried or scared
• Asking repeated questions about the death
• Feeling tired or overwhelmed
• Being withdrawn
• Having difficulty eating or sleeping

The Mexico High School Girls Soccer Team will start their game against Hannibal Thursday night with a moment of silence for Emma.

A visitation for Emma will be held tonight from 4-8 and funeral services will be tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at 11am at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, North of Mexico.
