Mexico City Council Makes a Decision on Bird Rides

The Mexico City Council is saying no to the electric scooter known as Bird Rides.

Mike Butler, Senior Account Executive, of City Partnerships with Bird Rides Incorporated addressed members of the Mexico City Council at a meeting tonight (Monday).

Butler said his company was founded in 2017 and is currently in 300 cities.

The rides work by people downloading an app, where they verify their age, and payment info.

Butler also reported the average cost of a Bird is around five to six dollars with the rides reaching a top speed of 15 miles per hour and could be ridden by those 18 years of age or older.

The Bird Rides Incorporated wanted to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for one year with the City of Mexico that would have brought 75 electric rides to Mexico.

It was also reported there would be no direct revenue for the City of Mexico except for sales tax.

Mexico City Manager Bruce Slagle brought up that accident rates for the electric scooters were increasing in a recent report and head injuries, some of them being lifelong caused by accidents on the rides were also increasing.

Several members of the Mexico City Council said they had no desire to look in to it any further.
