Controversial Murals to Come Down at Boone County Courthouse

Murals at the Boone County courthouse that are the center of controversy will be removed, following a vote today (Thursday) by the Boone County Commission.

The two murals, depicting images of Boone County’s history, some of them graphic, are located in the stairwell of the building and were painted during the expansion of the courthouse in 1994.

Two members of the Boone County Bar Association asked the Commission for their removal, as the images of whippings and lynchings are no longer means of justice and are troubling to those coming to the courthouse for court proceedings.

The murals are to be removed and stored with no guarantee that they will be displayed anywhere in the future.
