Local Hopes to Get Legalization Proposal Off the Ballot in November
Jefferson City resident, Joy Sweeney, filed a lawsuit to take the recreational marijuana legalization proposal off Missouri’s November ballot. She is supported by the national anti-drug group, Protect Our Kids.
The suit alleges that legalization supporters fell short of the required number of signatures to place the proposal on the ballot. It further claims that some policies in the measure are in violation of the state constitution.
Campaign manager John Payne feels the suit lacks merit and said in a statement that the campaign to legalize recreational marijuana “had the grassroots support necessary to collect the valid number of signatures required to reach the ballot”.
Missouri’s ballot proposal would allow those age 21 and older to buy and grow marijuana for personal consumption and automatically erase records of some past marijuana-related crimes.
