Director of Economic Development says Economic Repercussions from Hospital Closure Still to Come

Russell Runge, Director of Economic Development for the City of Mexico says that the local economic impact of the Audrain Community Hospital closure is yet to be fully measurable. However, he cites the loss of over 500 jobs that has a large impact on expendable income for our local area.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services released a report that explores the economic implications associated with COVID-19 and the synergy between health care and economic vibrancy – the Review of Rural U.S. Economic and Health Care Trends.

140 rural hospitals closed between January 2010 and July 2022. Associated community losses include the loss of hospital spending as well as a reduction in employee spending. Restaurants, professional services, and other healthcare services like rural ambulance services face losses as well.
