Huge Mexico Comeback Highlights NCMC Sweep
The North Central Missouri Conference opener for both the Mexico boys and girls basketball team was highlighted by a major comeback and punctuated by a 41-point blistering of the Marshall Owls.
The Mexico girls started the night, but not quite the way they had hoped. The Lady Bulldogs fell behind by 18 points in the first half as the host Lady Owls looked firmly in control, leading 27-12 at the half. MHS cut the lead to 11 with a 16-12 burst in the third quarter. The burst turned to a full-on downpour in a 24-point fourth as sophomore forward Claire Hudson got hot from distance. Hudson hit four of her five trey’s in the final frame for a co-game high 19-points. Mexico had nine other players in the score book, but no one else manage double figures as they came from behind to win 52-49.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-3 (1-0) with the win.
Marshall’s Kiki Simic also had 19 points, while Alexis Neff added 10 for the home team. The Lady Owls fell to 3-3 (01).
In the nightcap, the Mexico boys made sure no comeback was forthcoming against Marshall as they soundly defeated the Owls, 73-32.
MHS started the game on a 12-0 run and took a 32-4 first quarter lead behind the sophomore Jayden Eldredge’s hot shooting. Eldredge got the start in place of senior Jordan Shelton (forgot his jersey), and capitalized almost immediately as he connected on all 14 of his points in the first, including four from behind the three-point arc.
Mexico led at the half 49-9, but appeared to sleepwalk through the early part of the third quarter, when they went for 4:15 without a bucket. Then Shelton, who used Drew DeMint’s #13 jersey in the game, hit for 12 of the teams’ 16 3rd-quarter points, as he lead the team in scoring again. He went for 22.
DJ Long also added 10 as the Bulldogs got 10 players in the scorebook and 12 players in the game. Mexico improved to 4-1 (1-0).
Marshall fell to 0-4, 0-1 in conference play.
