Westminster Bests Mexico In Lindbergh Semi’s
Westminster Christian Academy came into Tuesday night’s semi-final matchup with Mexico as the #2 seed in the Lindbergh Invitational Tournament, versus MHS’ #3 seed. The Wildcats proved they deserved that higher seed after falling behind MHS midway through the first quarter 12-4, and then blitzing Mexico for the rest of the first half enroute to a 67-53 victory.
6’3″ senior forward Kobi Williams, a two-time all-state selection who had the night before set a season high with 32 points against Riverview Gardens, upped that number to 34 in the win over Mexico. 6’4″ WCA forward JD Robertson added 11.
DJ Long got Mexico started with a nice first quarter on his way to a team high 25 points, but the Dawgs struggled with defensive rotation all night. Mexico led 12-9 after one, but trailed 25-18 at the half and 43-30 after three quarters.
MHS closed to within seven in the fourth, but could never get closer.
Jordan Shelton, who injured his ankle in the opener, played but appeared limited early and was guarded by Williams. By the time he found his footing, it was too late. He added nine for Mexico while Jaydon Eldridge chipped in with seven.
Williams was 13-of-14 at the line as Westminster as a team was 19-of-21. Mexico, which has struggled all year at the line, was 3-of-12 unofficially.
Mexico falls to 10-4 with the loss and faces the host, Lindbergh High School in the 3rd place game. The 5th-seeded Flyers took #1 Jackson to the wire in a 55-52 loss. Game time Thursday is 5:50pm.
