Mexico Girls One and Done at Districts
The Mexico High School girls basketball team were one and done in the state tournament this year. Their slim chance at a state title ended in the opening round of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament held tonight (Tuesday night) in Centralia. The #6 seeded Lady Bulldogs were beaten 56-41 by the #3-seed Hallsville ballclub.
Hallsville had defeated the Lady Bulldogs earlier in the season, 64-30. Mexico hosted that January 14th match-up.
Mexico made it interesting early as good defense and a little bit of nerves from the Lady Indians that saw MHS lead the game 5-1 halfway through the first frame. Hallsville’s first lead came with just :12 left in the quarter on a Briley Brower three, at 8-7.
Mexico jumped back on top 9-8 early in the second quarter but it was the last lead they would see as the HHS offense exploded for a 21-point quarter. They led 29-16 at the half and never looked back.
Mexico finishes the year 9-18 and losers in seven of their last nine games. They were led by Claire Hudson with 14 points, Jordan Thurman added 10 and Capri’ona Fountain had 6.
Hallsville improves to 15-12 and will face the #2 Moberly Lady Spartans Thursday night at 7:30pm in Centralia. The Lady Indians were led by Kristen Jones with 16, and Haley Hagan with 13.
In the early game, #4 Kirksville easily handled the 5th seeded Macon Lady Tigers, 47-31. They will face the #1 seed Centralia in Thursday’s opening game.
