KWWR Sports Report 3/7/23

In high school boys playoff basketball last night, in Class 5, Jefferson City beat St. Francis Borgia to claim the District 5 championship 69 – 65 and in Class 6, Battle knocked off Rock Bridge 37 – 33 to claim the District 7 championship.

In Class 4 sectionals, Kirksville lost to Lutheran St. Charles 52 – 46 to end their season while Father Tolton beat Springfield Catholic 53 – 38 to advance to quarterfinal play on Friday, taking on Logan-Rogersville at SBU in Bolivar at 4:00.

Mizzou Men’s Basketball Coach Dennis Gates is now the USA Today SEC coach of the year.

Kobe Brown, his star player, also earned two first-team All-SEC nods as well.

Mizzou was predicted to finish 11th in the SEC preseason media poll and ended up fourth.

Gates did not make the cut for the SEC coach of the year, that title is being shared by Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams and Jerry Stackhouse of Vandy.

In spring training yesterday, St. Louis & KC both picked up wins.

The Cards beat the Astros 7 -1 while the Royals beat Arizona 10 – 1.

St. Louis takes on Detroit this afternoon at 12:05; the Royals have the day off.

The Blues are in Arizona tonight taking on the Coyotes, puck drops at 8:00.
