Two Area Students Headed to DC

Two area students are headed to Washington DC, for free, as local essay winners with Consolidated Electric Coop of Mexico. It’s part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour Essay contest, which will see some 18,000 students from over 45 states head to our nations capitol. Of those, over 100 students are from Missouri.

“It’s an amazing opportunity. They has to write a 500 work minimum essay on what they thought a day in their life would be like without electricity,” said Melanie Oetting, Manager of Administrative Services for the Mexico location.

Jocelyn Curtis, a student at Community R-VI High School, and Addison Bedsworth from North Callaway High School, will enjoy an all expenses paid trip, June 15-21, 2025.

Consolidated Electric Coop has been part of this program for over 25 years.

The itinerary includes a number of memorials including the FDR, MLK, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the Mt. Vernon George Washington Mansion Tour, the International Spy Museum, the Eisenhower and WWI Memorial, Capitol Hill, a White House Museum Tour, Smithsonian National Portrait tour, a Washington Nationals baseball game, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and Memorials for IWO JIMA, WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War Memorials.
