Auditor says former Randolph County Sheriff misspent funds

State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick said his office has found that former Randolph County Sheriff Aaron Wilson misappropriated or misspent $222,605 in county funds, and that almost $2,000 is still unaccounted for.

The report also said that Wilson used the county’s commissary account to buy eight vehicles and a trailer, forgoing the normal review and approval process.

Wilson had been barred from accessing county funds by a restraining order for the last few months he was in office.

Fitzpatrick condemned the former sheriff’s actions, saying Wilson treated public money like a personal piggy bank and showed blatant disregard for the law. He recommends that the Randolph County Commission pursue criminal charges against Wilson.
