Palmyra football player suffers major injury

Palmyra senior wide receiver/defensive back Jatayvion ” JT” Thomas was hurt in the fourth quarter of Friday’s Palmyra-Macon Clarence Cannon Conference match-up.

Thanks to the quick reaction of emergency crews at the game, the 5-8, 150-pounder was airlifted to University of Missouri Hospital, after he suffered fractures to his C4 and C5 vertebrae and significant trauma to his spine.

He has reportedly had two surgeries, including a six hour surgery to stabilize his neck and relieve pressure on his spinal cord

Community members have come together in Palmyra. They held a prayer vigil yesterday (Sunday) for Thomas and several of the players have been to Columbia to see him as has his coach.

Senior parents immediately began collecting donations, raising nearly $10,000 in the first 24 hours through cash, check and Venmo contributions. An account is being set up at Homebank, while collection jars will be placed at local businesses to help offset medical expenses.

Additional fundraisers are being planned. Local businesses are organizing raffles and sales to generate more support.

JT is currently stable at University Hospital in Columbia.
