Judge allows dog breeder abuse suspect in home detention review

A Boone County judge is allowing accused dog breeder Melissa Sanders to take part in a home detention study even as she faces more than a dozen animal abuse charges.

Sanders, 26, remains in the Phelps County Jail without bond.

She’s charged with three felonies and 15 misdemeanors after investigators said dozens of dogs were found dead or malnourished at her breeding facility, Magnum Opus German Shepherds.

Thursday’s decision doesn’t mean Sanders will be released the judge is only permitting a review of possible home detention with a family member.

Sanders has pleaded not guilty.

Her next hearing is scheduled for December 30th at the Boone County Courthouse.
