Mid-Missouri Bomb Squad restructures after agencies withdraw

The Mid-Missouri Bomb Squad is restructuring after two key agencies stepped away.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department and Columbia Fire Department have officially withdrawn, leaving the Columbia Police Department and MU Police Department as the squad’s only members.

Originally formed in 2008 as a multi-agency team, the bomb squad was designed to share costs and provide a rapid response to explosive threats.

But with a growing call volume and limited resources, the fire department says the squad no longer fits its mission.

Under a new agreement approved by the Columbia City Council, the restructured squad will include certified technicians from both police departments along with explosive detection dogs from each agency.
