California Man Charged after Officer-Involved Shooting in Columbia

A 31-year-old California man, Marc Lucas, faces multiple charges after a Christmas Day incident in Columbia.

Police say Lucas fired at an officer near a gas station, then set a couch on fire at a Marriott hotel and threatened workers at a Holiday Inn Express.

Fire crews responded to the hotel fire around 9:24 a.m., finding a torch-style lighter on the couch.

Video shows Lucas leaving the hotel just before firefighters arrived.

He later allegedly brandished a knife at Holiday Inn staff and at a BreakTime gas station across the street, prompting police to intervene.

Officers then used a Taser, which did not stop him, and Lucas was shot after he reportedly advanced toward them with the knife.

He remains hospitalized with injuries and has been denied bond as prosecutors pursue charges including unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, first-degree arson, trespassing, and assault.
