MHS Varsity Basketball Splits at Bowling Green
In a night of runs, the varsity girls and boys split wins and losses Thursday night at Bowling Green High School.
The Bowling Green Lady Bobcats started the night of scoring runs midway through the first quarter. Leading 5-4 after a Karlee Sefrit free throw, the Lady Cats went on a 15-0 scoring spree and never looked back. They led 17-4 after the first quarter and continued the barrage into the early second.
Junior Kaylyn Charlton bombed away with open looks from three and hit for four of her six trey’s in the first half. She led all scorers with 28 points on the night.
After the initial shock, Mexico was able to keep pace with Bowling Green for the rest of the game, but never challenged BGHS, trailing 30-15 at the half, and 40-21 after three frames. The final score was Bowling Green 52, Mexico 32.
Sophomore Claire Hudson led Mexico with six points, while Addison Heim and Kenzie Taylor each had five.
In boys action, the scoring spree theme was magnified particularly in a crazy first half that saw Mexico score the first 14 points. The Bobcats got a bucket before Mexico score 10 more. Bowling Green then hit for six straight before MHS ran off another 10 point run. BGHS hit for four more before Mexico closed the first half on a 12-0 run for a 48-12 first half lead.
Jordan Shelton hit an open trey and a layup to start the Dawgs. After a jam and two layups from DJ Long and a trey Anthony Shivers, Shelton scored on five straight possession and the rout was on. Mexico improved to 9-3 with the 70-44 win, while Bowling Green fell to 4-6.
Long and Shelton both had jams before Long fed Shelton for an exclamation point alley-oop in the third quarter that gave Mexico a 56-19 lead.
The Bulldogs played a rotation of younger players for most of the second half.
MHS was led by Shelton with 28 points, Long and Shivers both added 10 apiece. Also in the book was Kaden Benne with 7, Austin Maxwell had 6, Jaydon Eldridge 5, while Charlie Fisher and Sam Ryan each had a field goal.
BGHS was led by Markus Starks with 11.
