Mexico Falls In 3rd Place Tilt Versus Lindbergh
The Mexico Bulldogs fell to the host Lindbergh Flyers in the 3rd place game of the 2023 Lindbergh Invitational Thursday night. The final was 64-47. The loss dropped Class 4 Mexico to 10-5 overall while Class 6 Lindbergh improved to 6-5.
Mexico played the entire game without the services of senior shooting guard Jordan Shelton, who was held out to rest an ankle he turned in the opening round victory on Monday night.
The Dawgs kept it close in a low scoring first quarter, trailing 10-9 after one, but the Flyers began pulling away early in the second. Big man Quinn Sunderland, a 6’11” junior forward, hit for 10 of his 16 points in the frame as junior guard Zac Goss also hit for 8 of 16 in the quarter. It helped Lindbergh pull away to a 29-16 halftime lead. The two led LHS in scoring.
Mexico cut the lead to seven in the third, but couldn’t sustain their momentum as LHS went back up by 16 by the end of the quarter, 48-32. The Flyers hit their free throws in the fourth, going 7-of-10 at the line in the frame and going 12-of-16 overall at the charity stripe.
DJ Long had a game high 21 to pace Mexico. The Dawgs had eight other players in the book but nobody cracked double digits. Mexico now gets a week off before facing NCMC foe Kirksville on the road next Thursday.
