Columbia Police are warning residents not to believe false social media posts claiming a teenager was shot downtown Tuesday morning.

Police Officials says the reports are completely untrue and were generated by artificial intelligence through so-called “crime-monitoring” apps known for spreading wrong information.

The posts even cited fake counties and nonexistent sources.

Officials are urging the public to rely only on official police statements and trusted news outlets for accurate safety updates.
