Amber Alert leads to safe recovery of two Columbia children

A kidnapping case in Columbia ended without harm to the two young children after officers issued an Amber Alert.

Police say at about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, an adult female drove away with a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old from the 1600 block of North Providence Road.

The alert prompted a statewide response, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol located the vehicle on I-70 near the Higginsville exit roughly an hour later.

The children were found unharmed, and Joy A. Smith, 24, of Columbia, was arrested on two counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of first-degree tampering.
