A Boone County grand jury handed down an indictment on a Columbia man accused of setting two house fires on Paris Road earlier this summer — one that claimed a life.

47-year-old Brandon Butchkoski faces charges including second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree arson, and possession of a controlled substance.

Investigators say Butchkoski set a backpack on fire and threw it onto a home’s roof in late June, and earlier in the month, allegedly started another fire at the same house that later killed Donovan Baylis.

The indictment combines both cases. Butchkoski is being held without bond and is set to be arraigned November 10th at the Boone County Courthouse.
