The Maries County Prosecutors’ Office is trying to determine whether or not to file charges against Vienna Police Chief Shannon Thompson.

This after video evidence showed a lit cigarette Thompson discarded at the Vienna Pointe Residential Care Center in August, was the cause of a fire which heavily damaged the facility.

Thompson, who was at the facility for an accidental 9-1-1 call, discarded a lit cigarette into a planter, then a few minutes later appeared to remove the cigarette and put his foot in the planter to attempt to put out ashes.

About an hour and half later, high winds blew the embers into a blaze which caught the front of the structure on fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the single-story building was engulfed by fire.

Strong winds and a limited water supply hampered suppression efforts.

No one was injured.
