A Columbia man was taken into custody on suspicion of running a cryptocurrency investment scheme, according to an online arrest report.
Charles Spencer Burri, who operates Burri Asset Management, was arrested Wednesday after being charged earlier this month with financial exploitation of an elder and stealing $750 or more.
Police say Burri walked into the Boone County Jail lobby and turned himself in.
The Columbia Police Department had previously posted on Facebook seeking help from the public to identify Burri and others involved in similar scams, hoping to locate additional victims.
According to a probable cause statement, Burri promised a 71-year-old woman returns on a $15,000 investment made in July, tied to cryptocurrency investments.
When she requested her money back, Burri allegedly stopped responding. Bank records showed a $10,000 deposit the day after the investment.
Authorities believe there may be about 10 additional victims.
Burri was released on a $10,000 bond.
The department says the investigation is ongoing.
