An early Saturday morning shooting in downtown Columbia has taken the life of a Stephens College senior. Aiyanna Williams died after being transported, along with two other shooting victims, to a local hospital. She died Sunday in the hospital.

Williams was shot along with another woman and a man in the 900 block of East Broadway, Saturday morning just after 1:30am. Reports suggest a man, 23-year-old Misael Covarrubias got in an argument with another group of people and responded by pulling a weapon and opening fire on a crowd of people.

Covarrubias, from Fellsmere, Florida, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He is currently being held in the Boone County Jail without bond. He is currently charged with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

Williams graduated from Battle High School and was the recipient of a Muriel battle scholarship, supporting her passion for ballet and her dreams of continuing her dance education.
