Dryer Sparks Small Basement Fire at Room 38, No Injuries Reported

The Columbia Fire Department says a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in the basement of the building housing Room 38 was accidental, sparked by a clothes dryer.

Fire crews were called to the 30 block of Eighth Street around 2:43 p.m. and quickly contained the small blaze within five minutes.

Fire marshals began investigating right away, while crews worked to ventilate the building and a nearby structure after detecting high carbon monoxide levels.

About 20 firefighters responded, including trainees who assisted with cleanup.

No injuries were reported.
