Kehoe calls for special session

Gov. Mike Kehoe has called for a special session of the Missouri General Assembly, beginning Jun 2nd.

The issues at the forefront of the session will include possible state financing of up to 50% for new stadiums for the Kansas City Royals and expansion for Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs. Kehoe announced the session in a 10am news conference this morning.

Gov. Kehoe’s plan to finance stadium bills for the Royals and Chiefs, comes as both teams are looking atoffers to move from the state of Kansas. In order to compete with Kansas’s offer, Missouri would pay for up to half the cost of a new stadium for the Royals and renovations for the Chiefs.

The special session would be just in time for teams to decide to stay in Missouri. The teams have until June 30 to decide on a proposal from the state of Kansas.

Other items Kehoe would like the special session to look at include disaster relief after recent tornadoes and severe weather in St. Louis and eastern Missouri, and a look at state funding for projects that the House didn’t pass during the regular session. The House opted not to pass a $500 million budget bill without consulting the Senate which had passed the bill and expected the House to o the same. The bill includes $50 million for the University of Missouri Research Reactor.
