The Moberly Police Department is investigating several reports of check fraud involving bill payments mailed to Ameren’s Chicago post office box.

Police say the checks were altered through “check washing” removing and rewriting payee names and amounts and then used for fraudulent payments.

Detectives are working with Ameren’s fraud team to track down those responsible.

Police urge residents to monitor bank accounts, report suspicious charges, and use secure or electronic payment options.

Ameren customers can pay online at Ameren.com, by phone, or at the Bratchers Market kiosk on South Morley Street in Moberly.
