Montgomery County residents protesting Amazon Datacenter

Tensions ran high in Montgomery County Thursday as dozens of residents packed the County Commission Room to protest a proposed Amazon data center.

Many voiced concerns over environmental impacts including noise, water usage, and potential effects on farmland and land values.

The project, known as “Project Green,” could eventually include up to 17 buildings and use the energy and water of about 100,000 homes, according to the International Energy Agency.

Supporters including local school officials and economic leaders say the facility would drive growth, create thousands of construction jobs, and bring in millions in tax revenue.

The County Commission says it’s considering a temporary moratorium while reviewing environmental studies and infrastructure needs before making a final decision.
