Popp sentenced in fatal hit and run

A Jefferson City man was sentenced yesterday for the July 2024 hit and run death of 50-year old cyclist John Brummit.

Diego Popp had pled guilty to one count of Involuntary Manslaughter – 1st Degree, with charges of Leaving Scene Of Accident and Operating A Motor Vehicle In A Careless And Imprudent Manner being dismissed.

Cole County Judge Daniel Green sentenced Popp to seven years, shaving off one year of time due to Popp’s shown remorse and accountability. The judge also gave him credit for the 15 months he had already spent in the Cole County Jail.

Popp stopped at the scene the next day and told officers he did not stop at the time of the crash because he had been drinking and did not want to get into trouble.
