Wheelchair battery explosion in Columbia

Columbia Firefighters called to a home in southwest Columbia last (Friday) night in the 4100 block of Grant Lane, after a small fire was started near the entryway of the home. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish it.

The fire being blamed on a lithium-ion battery from an electric wheelchair that exploded within the home. The wheelchair suffered significant damage, but the fire did not spread to the rest of the house.

One person was treated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation.
