Mexico’s Brendan McKeown is State Bound in High School Tennis Tournament

Mexico High School’s Brendan McKeown is headed to State after advancing in Individual Sectionals against Kirksville yesterday (Saturday).

McKeown won the Tiebreaker 10-5 and recorded his 50th overall career win.

McKeown is the first State qualifier for Mexico boys tennis since 2015.

Declan Gleeson also competed in Sectionals was 0-2 in sets against Father Tolton.

Head coach Tony Senor says “Super proud of Declan and Brendan both for making it this far in the post season. Declan had to play Father Tolton’s #1 ranked player and he gave it his all. Declan was one of the best #2 ranked players for the boys in recent memory. He will be missed next season for his play, leadership, and never say never attitude.

Brendan dropped the first set to Kirksville 2-6. I knew it was over by a long shot. We have played Gavin Pike of Kirksville many times over the course of Brendan’s career. Gavin takes Brendan to the brink and they always bring the best out of each other. Brendan took the 2nd set in a Tiebreaker. Then Brendan had to win the third set, which is a 10 Point Super Tiebreaker. Brendan showed a lot of heart and guts to keep playing at the level for so long. We are super pleased to have a state qualifier again. Looking forward to the experience and trying to get All State Honors with an 8th Place or higher finish.”

McKeown will compete at the MSHSAA Class 1 Individual Tournament in Springfield, Missouri this Friday and Saturday, May 19, and 20, 2023.
